Grandpa came out of the closet. Not in the McGreevey way, but when I stopped riding my bicycle and scaring him to death, he rejoined everyone sitting on furniture in rooms. Hehe.
I'm thinking that when I was a kid -- unrelated to the Grandpa/bicycle issue -- it was fun to watch the Olympics and I looked forward to it. Last night, while I was watching the Parade of Nations, which I totally love/hate, the Hubs wandered into the room and announced his philosophy that the Olympics are "more of a threat to society than pornography". (Discuss. Or interpret as you see fit.) I'm finding the actual events to be pretty boring, although I've had it on off and on throughout the day. As for the parade, I do like to see what they're wearing from each country, and how they decided who was going to carry the flag, and so on. I also really liked watching the medal ceremonies when I was a kid, but they don't so much show them anymore. I always found it very touching to see the winners' reactions when they stood up there and heard their national anthems played. I was a naif back then, I guess. Now I just see the whole thing as somebody making more money. Look, all these countries send their teams and practically nobody wins except the same countries over and over. Look at the list of medal winners so far; there's like 8 countries that have won medals, maybe a dozen. Out of the hundreds of countries there. What's wrong with this picture?
The storm is moving faster than expected (as it did in Florida, I believe, which is why places like Punta Gorda were caught off guard) and it hasn't even started raining yet, as it's moving out to sea faster than it can get here. Now they're predicting heavy rains only from midnight to five a.m., but even that may peter out.
On another note altogether, just a word to say that I get a kick out of reading about Crazy Shirley, since I used to have one of those, too. I was talking to my Wonderful Niece before, and she was asking me some about what our Shirley was like when I was a kid. She was a character then, too, in her way. Ahh, Shirl. She was a good egg. (A statement that was for years followed by the added line "Too bad she's a little cracked." Sorry. Old joke.)
