A brief explanation for Boxx, since she asked.

I've had three sets of hearing aids since 1992, with the modifications this week, it's now kind of like 3 and a half. About a year after I got this set almost two years ago, they came out with in-the-ear hearing aids that I can use for the first time, but I'll probably never get them since I went with this new variation instead. I wear BI-CROS digital hearing aids. CROS are designed for people who have normal hearing in one ear and little or no hearing in the other. It's a relatively rare situation among people who need hearing aids, apparantly. BI-CROS is for people like me, with little or no hearing in one ear and hearing in the good ear that needs a little help, too. The aid on my 100% deaf ear is a transmitter, and sends sound into the ear that hears. How this all came about, by the way, is here.

Turns out that the blanket/coat drive at school isn't so much a school service project as it is a boy's Eagle Scout project that he's coordinating through a school service club, so as far as I'm concerned, this is better. I have my philosophical differences with the Boy Scouts, but in general I'm a big fan of their work, and I'm always very impressed by what kids have to do to earn the Eagle rank. I loaded the two cartons of blankets and the bag of coats into my car when I got home today, and the kid'll come and get them at school tomorrow. He's the second Eagle I know of in this year's senior class; he's a senior class officer and the other one is an officer in student government. Some years there's just a run on Eagle scouts, some years none at all. Funny, the boys are never embarrased to have people know they're Eagles, but I've never known a girl to brag about getting her Gold award in Girl Scouts, and we've had one or two of those as well. Two of my all-time favorite Junior class presidents (from the 15 years I was Junior class advisor) were brothers, both Eagle scouts. They were remarkable boys, great kids, both went to college on ROTC scholarships. The elder is out of the service now; the younger is about to return to Afghanistan. Things take a turn. I guess if I were a soldier, I'd sure as hell want one of these boys to be the officer in charge of me.

The Hubs finally renewed his driver's license today, which I was beginning to doubt he would ever do. He "took the morning off" from work, got to the DMV by 8, was out of there by 8:15, and actually got to the office before anyone else. He may be damn good at his job -- I know he is, in fact -- but he is the world's most horrible procrastinator about anything else. The weatherstripping for the front door that's still sitting in his closet is a testament to that. What's he waiting for, cold weather? Christmas?
