So 806

07.07.2005

6:02 pm

One hardly knows what to say. Like everyone else in this country, I woke up to the news of today's attack on London. I watched the TV obesessively for a few hours, and then I turned it off. I already know.

We could all rant about the inhumanity, the hypocrisy, the absurd waste. There is no need. Things are quiet on diaryland this afternoon.

R received email from a good friend now living in London, just about an hour ago. Although it was unlikely that she was near the bombing targets, it was good to know that she's safe. Irrationally, I was thinking all day about K getting to and from class today on the Washington Metro system, even though I know that there's no threat there. I find myself wishing that everyone I know might live in New Zealand, or perhaps Wyoming.

This fear passes, although perhaps a little less each time. I was in London in March 2003 when the train in Madrid was bombed. And of course, we could see the smoke from the towers right here from the Jersey side of the river.

So.
