Meet the Damn Neighbors 250

10.03.2003

12:44 pm

We've lived in the Mouse House for almost 18 years, and so we've had a short series of neighbors. Mostly, it was the remnants of the WWII vets who totally changed this farmland into a major suburb 50 years ago. But baby, the times they are a'changin'.

On the left, we have a lovely family that speaks very little English and a whole lot of Russian. This is the big thing here; we've had a tremendous influx of Russian immigrants over the last 15 years in town. But they're friendly, they smile. They're turning into Americans before our eyes. Their 14 year old son is named Vlad. But the baby, just 4 months old, is Michelle. See?

Then on the right we have Kang. The family Kang. They may be Korean, but I really don't know. They neither speak English or respond to a wave and a cheery "Hi!" They look at me like I've got elephants growing out of my head. But Hubs sometimes gets a response from the Kang Hubs over the fence.

Until last weekend, when this same head Kang informed us that he wanted to remove the tree on our shared property line, a nice old tree. Okay, no one wants it to fall on either house. In the interest of neighborliness, Hubs (a noted tree lover) agreed, and even to footing half the bill.

Wednesday night, Kang rang our doorbell and told us that the tree is coming out on Friday. Today. Arriving at 8:00 a.m.

This would be the same Friday I took the day off to have my mammogram (all fine, thanks) and have furniture delivered. I got home from the Breast Clinic about 9:30 and found a GIGANTIC truck, complete with crane mounted on the back, parked on OUR LAWN. All the way across our lawn, blocking the front door and everything.

I am so pissed off. All the stuff -- sawdust, branches -- is raining down on our lawn, as well as the empty coffee cups from the tree guys. They say they'll clean up. We'll see. Let's just hope my furniture (chairs from the ILS) can get through the door. If not, I'm billing the Kangs for as long as the furniture guys have to wait.

I'll let you know.

(Friday Five tomorrow, I think.)
