Just Outside the Window 419

04.24.2004

6:53 pm

The smallest room in the house is at the back corner. One wall has the door to the room in it, one wall has a big closet that takes up the whole wall (double sliding doors), and each of the other two walls has a window. One window overlooks the driveway and the garage door, the other looks out into a small part of the backyard.

Lots going on out there today.

This is the room that is now the Hubs' study, which means that when the weather's nice, both windows are open. The backyard facing window offers a view of the blackberry bushes, which don't look like anything yet, and the Hubs just moved one of the bird feeders there so that he could see it from the window. This morning he told me that he could see goldfishes from the window.

Blank look from me. A little brain jump tells me that this must be one of those moments where the good ear is not hearing the frequency of the sound that's hitting it, and probably there are not golfishes in the backyard. Quick, what sounds like goldfishes and could be in the backyard?

Goldfinches, of course; there are goldfinches at the feeder. Beautiful, bright yellow goldfinches. I can't take a picture, though, unless I happen to see one outside, since I'd be shooting through the window screen. Just beautiful, though.

And then, as if his day weren't going well enough, a miracle happened outside the other window. About 1:30 this afternoon, a guy knocked on the our door and asked if we wanted to sell the car sitting there.

That would be the planter, the Hubs' dead Tracker that hasn't moved -- or even started -- for about a year and half now. The car I'd been wondering if we would have to sell with this house in 2030. The car he was taking no initiative whatsoever to get rid of.

Someone knocked on the door, gave him a hundred dollars, and towed it away. Now he sees goldfinches out the back, and a nice empty driveway out the side. Good day for him, no? Amusing for me.
