The cutest little boy in the whole world, ever, is my cousin Peter, who is between me (left) and my sister (right) in this picture, 1955. He grew up into a really good guy, too.

He has liver cancer. I just found out. His mother, who had her 88th birthday a couple of weeks ago, doesn't know yet.

I knew, of course, that sooner or later, one of my cousins, someone in the family of my generation, would have to be the first of us to die. Thirteen years ago there was a good possibility it was going to be me. I never imagined it would be him. This was news I didn't expect to hear for another 30 years or so. I have not sorted out a bit of this yet at all.
